Kenyans on Twitter have disregarded Azimio leader Raila Odinga's appeal for tax evasion and civil disobedience.

During a rally at Kamukunji grounds on Tuesday June 27th 2023, Raila, in his speech, urged his followers to carpool or walk to work in order to reduce the amount of fuel consumed by public transportation vehicles.

This, according to him, would prevent the Kenya Kwanza government from receiving the funds from the contentious Finance Act of 2023's mandated 16% tax on fuel.

Kenyans on Twitter, however, have stated that they are unable to walk while Raila, their leader, who is expected to lead by example, made a grand entrance to the Kamukunji grounds while driving fancy, fuel guzzler cars, and asked him to set an example by traveling on foot from his house in Karen to other locations.

Some claimed that because they live in remote places, walking to work would cause them to be late. Raila, in his speech, had urged firms to permit their employees to stroll to and from work in his appeal.

In order to reduce fuel usage, and thus the amount of fuel levy collected, Raila also urged Matatu drivers to transport extra people and keep fewer vehicles on the road. Despite the fact that it is against the law for public transportation vehicles to carry too many passengers, this nevertheless, is not a rare occurrence on Kenyan roads.

According to Ahmednasir Abdullahi, a reknowned senior counsel in Kenya, Raila's call for Kenyans to abstain from paying taxes and walk to work is neither here nor there. The senior counsel could not understand why Raila did not ask citizens to take public transportation in lieu of walking, wondering where the justification for asking Kenyans to walk lies.
