FEMICIDE: The new word in our streets now. Femicide, is the practise of killing of women by men especially on account of their gender. Kenya from 2014 to date has recorded  approximately 500 victims, with most cases still under trial. Several cases have made headlines. On September 19th 2018, Monica Kimani was found dead in her Lamurai Garden apartment shortly after she arrived from a business trip in South Sudan. The confirmed killer, Jowie, stole an identification card to access the apartment. The victim was found with a slit throat and the killers DNA samples were found in the victims shorts.

In 2019, Naftali Kinuthia hacked Ivy Wangechi with an axe. Ivy was a medical student at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. He hacked her at 10am - in broad day light. Naftali confirmed that he did the act saying he was overwhelmed with jealousy when he saw his girlfriend hugging another man. The court awarded him a sentence of 40 years.

Purity Wangechi, had a dream of being a journalist and enrolled at KIMC in October 2021. Her dream was cut short on May 14th the following year when she was found dead with stab wounds in the neck at Buriria Village in the outskrits of Kiambu. Her 24 year old boyfriend became the main suspect to the murder.

In January 2nd 2024, Scarlet Wahu met her demise in an AirBnB in South B, Nairobi. Matara, her boyfriend, was the prime suspect. He denied the charges. The court will have a hearing on 25th February 2024 to determine the case. Matara is detained in Nairobi remand prison. 

In January 25th 2024, the story of the year made headlines when Rita Waeni's body was found dead in an apartment in Roysambu, with her head chopped off. The killer has not been determined yet.

Femicide is just another trending vice that needs to be stopped.
